Three Things You Should Know About Football This Week

Dominic Raiola Suspended For Stomping

Detroit Lions' center Dominic Raiola was given a one game suspension after he was found guilty of intentionally stomping on another players ankle after a play. Raiola was previously fined $10,000 the month before for striking a player on the Patriots. This is not the first time that a Lions player was found guilty of stomping on another player as Ndamukong Suh, Defensive Tackle for the Lions, was given a two game suspension back in 2011 for a similar incident.

He finishes his rookie season with 175 passing yards and a 42.0 passer rating. Back up quarterback Brian Hoyer is also questionable with a shoulder injury, so practice squad quarterback Connor Shaw may see playing time for Cleveland this Sunday.

Three things you should know about Formula 1 this week

Honda's promising return to F1 as a power unit supplier for McLaren next year

After a miserable four years of not being a contender for both drivers and constructors championship, the McLaren team decided to ditch the Mercedes-Benz partnership it had since the 1995 season, and bring back the iconic and reliable Japanese Honda engine. McLaren and Honda have been together before in Formula 1 between the 1988 and 1992 seasons, in which Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost won 4 drivers championships and 4 constructors championships. Now in 2015 they hope to achieve the same success it had back in the late 80's and early 90's with the British driver Jensen Button, and the Spaniard Fernando Alonso.

Stolen Red Bull trophies found in a lake

The Red Bull team headquarters in Milton Keynes, UK ,was raided on December 8 by an unknown group of men. Neither the facility or equipment inside was vandalized, but about 20 of the 60 trophies that were inside were stolen and recently found in a nearby lake in Sandhurst ,UK. The team who had won both the constructors and drivers championship four years in a row through the 2010 to the 2013 season, luckily didn't have the most important trophies stolen. The staff was absolutely devastated by the loss of the trophies that had taken many seasons to win. According to the police the criminals used a 4x4 to drive through the factories entrance. Strangely enough the 4 time world champion, Sebastian Vettel, visited the factory to say farewell to his former mechanics shortly before leaving to join  Ferrari for 2015.

McLaren 2015 drivers line up finally revealed

McLaren's 2015 driver line up: Kevin Magnussen, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button

After weeks of waiting, McLaren directors have finally chosen its 2 drivers and the test driver for the 2015 season. Jensen Button has kept his seat from last year, Fernando Alonso is rejoining the team after leaving in 2009 for Ferrari, and the Danish driver, Kevin Magnussen has lost his seat as a main driver from last year. But Kevin still has a huge job next season which is to help the mechanics develop the new 2015 engine, especially with Honda's first take at the new formula 1 hybrid technology.

Three Things you Should Know About College Football This Week...

UAB BLAZERS SHUT DOWN FOOTBALL PROGRAM

University of Alabama at Birmingham is shutting down the schools football program. Eliminating football jeopardizes UAB's membership in Conference USA and associated programs including the school's marching band, though the school said it hopes to remain in the league and Division I. UAB is also cutting its bowling and rifle programs. UAB made the decision after a campus-wide study conducted by a consulting firm over the past year.

UAB is the first major college football program since Pacific in 1995 to shut down.

UAB will have to pay $2.425 million for canceling future games with Tennessee, Kentucky, Troy, South Alabama and Georgia State. UAB was scheduled to play Tennessee in Nashville in 2015 and at Kentucky in 2016. UAB must pay Tennessee $925,000 and Kentucky $500,000 to get out of those games. The Blazers also must pay for canceling future home-and-home series in 2015 and 2016 with Troy ($400,000), South Alabama ($300,000) and Georgia State ($300,000).

UAB said in a release that it subsidizes $20 million of the athletic department's operating budget of some $30 million annually, and said both those numbers rank fifth in Conference USA. The university said the difference over the next five years would be an extra $49 million with football, including a projected $22 million needed for football facilities and upgrades.

Arrest made in shooting death of Auburn player Jakell Mitchell

Auburn Police investigate a shooting at the Tiger Lodge apartments in Auburn, Ala., early Sunday morning, Dec. 14, 2014. (AP Photo/Montgomery Advertiser/Albert Cesare)

Red shirted freshman football player Jakell Lenard Mitchell, 18, died after being shot in the chest early Sunday morning at an off-campus apartment complex. It was the same apartment complex where two former football players and a third man were shot to death outside a 2012 pool party. Auburn police arrested 22-year-old Markale Deandra Hart of Camp Hill, Alabama, on murder charges on Sunday afternoon. Hart was being held at the Lee County Jail on $150,000 bond. Police have not released a motive for the crime, but said they don't expect additional arrests.

Mitchell red shirted this season for the Auburn Tigers out of nearby Opelika High School. Able to play both back and tight end, he was expected to contend for a starting spot next season. Mitchell missed his senior season at Opelika as he recovered from an ACL injury. He had rushed for 392 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2013 as a high school junior.

Jakells father said his son also dreamed about becoming an FBI agent after finishing school.

Marcus Mariota's Heisman Trophy win adds to Oregon's stunning success

The Ducks couldn’t ask for a better star to lead the charge. Mariota compiled a season for the ages this fall. His 53 total touchdowns tied the Heisman record set by 2008 winner Sam Bradford of Oklahoma and finished the regular season as the nation’s leader in passing efficiency (183.6) thanks to a remarkable 38 touchdown passes against only two interceptions. The Pac-12 champions, the Oregon Ducks finished 12-1 and secured a Rose Bowl berth where they will play unbeaten Florida State

Now the program has its first Heisman Trophy. Mariota is one of the biggest reasons why. Mariota has led Oregon to a 35-4 record in those three seasons.

Oregon needs two more wins to earn the championship that has eluded them for so long. That task starts Jan. 1 in Pasadena against the Seminoles and last season’s Heisman winner, quarterback Jameis Winston. With a win, Oregon will play for a national championship for the first time since 2010.

That’s the goal for Mariota and the Ducks going forward. Asked on Saturday to reflect on the Heisman’s significance for the Oregon program, the quarterback said he’d trade the trophy in a second if it meant bringing a championship to Eugene. The Ducks finally need a championship to complete their growth.

Selznick. One of his main focuses was how the African American actors were treated in the making of the movie.
It will also tell how during the time of the movie premiere none of the movie's African American stars were allowed to attend. They also were not included in the movie's promotional program.

The Interview: Sony shelves worldwide release

Movie Theaters around the nation have cancelled screenings of the film, about a plot to kill North Korea's leader, prompting Sony to shelve it altogether. This has caused much controversy in Hollywood, Ben Stiller called the move "a threat to freedom of expression". Hackers warned movie-goers who planned to watch the movie. President Obama recommended that "people go to the movies", but stressed that the hack was "very serious". Sadly Sony had to cancel the premiere of the movie based on the hostile demands of the hackers. Other hollywood starts are coming to the aid of Franco and Rogan trying to defend their right to freedom of expression. Oscar-wining screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, said: "Today the US succumbed to an unprecedented attack on our most cherished, bedrock principle of free speech."

Three Things You Should Know About The Boston Bruins This Week

Bruins huge win in OT vs Minnesota lose to Nashville in shootout

The Bruins started off a tough 3 game road stand vs the Predators, Wild, and Jets. The Bruins started off in Nashville where they played the red hot Predators who upgraded in the off season with 30 goal scorer James Neal. The Bruins struck first, Milan Lucic who has had a slow start got it going for the Bruins, but the Predators tied it right back up. Both goalies played great in the second period until Mike Ribero scored for the Predators to go up 2-1. 2 minutes later Riley Smith answers the call and scores to tie the game back up at 3. The goalies continued to stand on their heads and sent the game to be decided in overtime, but that was not enough. The teams went to a shootout where Derek Roy beat Tuukka Rask, and that goal would go on to win it the Bruins only picking up 1 point. The Bruins played the next night in Minnesota against a good defensive team. That was not seen early on as the Bruins again struck first. Carl Soderberg got the scoring going for the B's. Right back come the Wild under a minute later the Wild tie it up. The Bruins in a tough battle again. Patrice Bergeron shows the saying "any shot on goal is a good shot on goal." The puck bounces and beats the goalie to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead early. In the 3rd period the Bruins let in a weak goal that hits off a defender and goes in the net. The Bruins get a point and will try and win the game in overtime. Claude julien goes with 3 forwards and a defense man Carl Soderberg makes a great pass and Loui Erickson puts the puck home and the Bruins win 3-2 in OT. A huge point for the Bruins who will be looking to build off of the win and move back into a good playoff position.     David Krejci back after nagging injuryBruins top line center David Krejci finally came back after missing the last 17 of 19 games the Bruins had. David Krejci is a big part of this Bruins team, and brings a great offensive game to the team that helps them out a lot. Krejci being out hurts some of his teammates too. Milan Lucic plays very well with Krejci in the lineup providing him with good passes, and they have played together for a while. Lucic has been off to a slow start without Krejci in the lineup. Lucic is a former 30 goal scorer and could get even more but with Krejci out he just cannot see to score. He has picked up his game lately and will continue to play well with Krejci back. Also having Krejci out puts Carl Soderberg up to the 2nd line. This can be a problem because Soderberg is a very good player and when he is matched up against other teams 3rd lines they cannot stop him. The Bruisn have lacked offense in the games without Krejci as well. They have been shutout 3 times this year which in the last couple of years is the amount of time they have been shutout combined. Now with Krejci back who is a point a game player the Bruins will look to have better offense, and win more games.   Bruins looking to add goal scoring to top line The Bruins who in the last 5-10 years have always had a solid top line right winger that has great goal scoring ability. But this year after not resigning Jerome Iginla the Bruins top line winger is unclear who will play there. The Bruins have not had great goal scoring this year being shutout 3 times. So there have been trade rumors circulating around the league. Many players have been on the rumor mill that the Bruins are looking at. Including Chris Stewart, David Perron, Jordan Eberle, Patrick Sharp, Evander Kane, T.J. Oshie, and David Backes. The Bruins may have to give up some key players such as Loui Erickson, Riley Smith, Malcolm Subban, and other players. The Bruins are at a disadvantage because they do not have much room in their salary cap so they will have to get rid of some bigger contracts to get a solid top line palyer. The Bruins are seriously looking to make moves and one could be made very soon.TJ Oshie_7718165

Three Things You Should Know About The NHL This Week

Recently there has been an outbreak of disease in the NHL. A total of fourteen players and counting have been diagnosed with the mumps. Captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Sidney Crosby, currently the best player in the league was diagnosed recently. Crosby was given both vaccines for this disease and still aquired it. The NHL is taking action to stop the outbreak from the total of 14 players and two referees diagnosed. Players can prevent themselves from getting the mumps by taking the MMR vaccine; this vaccine is 90 percent effective if the two shots are taken. Also there is an enforcement for the players to use hand sanitizer and their own water bottles. The players want to get back onto the ice as quick as possible but their recovery is usually around a week to nine days. Players are required to stay home for five days after the swelling of the glands to make sure the disease isn’t being spread and no longer contagious.

Head coach Dallas Eakins from the Edmonton Oilers has been fired. General manager Craig MacTavish, has decided to decided to keep the rest of the coaching staff and bringing up a new head coach from the Oklahoma City Barons. Todd Nelson, the new head coach signed a three year deal as head coach with the Oilers. Eakins had to be let go due to the poor performance of the team. This season the Oilers stand in last place with the record of (7-19-5). On top of their terrible record, they have lost 15 out of the past 16 games played. While Nelson is transitioning into the job MacTavish is taking over as a temporary head coach and will help Nelson along the way. The staff of the Oilers believe Nelson will be able to do a good job and bring the Oilers' back to glory. With experience of coaching in the NHL back in 2008-2010 with the Atlanta Thrashers it is expected that Nelson will have success. Through the help of the rest of the staff and Nelson’s lead the Oilers hope to make a Stanley Cup playoff appearance.

The 2015 Bridgestone Winter Classic game played on January 1st is coming very soon. This is the seventh annual Winter Classic and will be hosted by the capitals game is going to be held at Nationals Park. The matchup will be between the Washington Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks. Other teams wanted to be included in the Winter Classic this year. The Boston Bruins were really eager to be in the action especially Milan Lucic and Tuukka Rask. During the 2010 Winter Classic hosted in Boston, Lucic was injured and not able to play. Rask missed out on the opportunity due to being behind starting goalie Tim Thomas who played. This matchup between the Capitals and the Blackhawks is going to be a very competitive game being the second appearance for both teams. The Blackhawks are currently ranked first in the Western Conference and the Capitals fourth in the Eastern Conference. Both teams have special jerseys for this event and prepare the but on a show.

As many have seen Kate Middleton's been wearing shorter hemlines, sheer pieces and younger-looking ensembles because she recently hired 27-year-old Natasha Archer as her newest stylist. With a new stylist  people thought she’d come here and open up to more American designers clothes. But she stuck with her own style of Seraphine; a British Maternity line. The whole time she was in NYC she only wore two American labels: A Tory Burch coat and J. Crew jeans. These were both to a game and to meet Hilary Clinton. Her nights out in the city consisted of fancy reworn dresses.

In the picture above Kate pulls off a hot pink Mulberry style coat showing a peek of her baby bump.

Mayhem, a young 4 year old formerly known as the little girl who reconstructed the red carpet dresses strikes again. This time with a bit more seriousness.

J. Crew has been wanting to update their children’s line and they found this one little girl perfect for that. What they do is have her simple little preschool drawings turned into actual clothing. Above, shows her being fitted with a remade cloth with her original drawing on it. There they attach fabrics and do the designers magic of sewing everything eventually making a dress. Everyone’s excited to see what she has next in store.

Michael Jeffries, CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch finally steps down finally since his dismissal letter back in February. His letter explained of his “ poor leadership.” He had made unprofessional comments of plus sized people shopping at his store. The loss of him to the company won’t be too bad, As Abercrombie & Fitch's stock price shot up 6.6 percent on Tuesday morning after the news of Jeffries' departure.

Boeheim has not been happy with the teams play thus far, "there are some things I can't coach like catching the ball" referencing the sloppy play of the Orange and large amount of turnovers. "This isn't the most talented team I've coached but they have the potential to be a very good group, the effort just hasn't been there yet" the legend of a coach wants to see more from his team and knows they are capable of much more then what has been shown.

It's list making season and Entertainment Weekly has made Jimmy Fallon Entertainer of the Year in their annual "Best and Worst" issue.  Every year they choose an entertainer who kept their audience the most entertained for the year.   Jimmy Fallon is a well known comedian and has always provided people with an immense amount of laughter.  In his first year as the host of the Tonight Show, the 40 year old comic turned a late night interview to "the hottest party in town, a celebrity playpen full of games, music, surprise guests and good vibes all around."  Fallon did the unexpected and increased the Tonight Show's ratings from when it had been in Jay Leno's power years ago.  Being humble, Jimmy states that although he has won this honor, The Tonight Show was a team effort and couldn't have been successful without everyone who is involved with it.  He says, "We honestly have the best human beings for this job."

                              Bill Cosby Sexual Assualt Accusations

What Does Bill Cosby's family think of these allegations?

Bill Cosby has been accussed of sexually assaulting 19 women.  We've all come to love Bill Cosby while The Cosby Show was on T.V.  He is an extremely famous man and is now 77, married and has five children, one of them deceased.  These accusssations started in November of 2002.  In the past few months it has become extremely public.  All of these accussations go back to many years ago and most women that have come forward had never told anyone before or tried to but no one believed them.  Most of the women claim Cosby first drugged them and then sexually assaulted them.  This has been an ongoing scandal for a while and his family is with him 100%.  Cosby's youngest daughter, Evin, 38 years old is supportive of him and disagrees with the accusations.  She released a brief statement to Access Hollywood, "He is the FATHER you thought you knew.  The Cosby Show was my today's T.V. reality show. Thank you. That's all I would like to say."  Cosby's wife Camille released a statement to CBS News claiming her husband is not the person media has painted him as in light of the recent accusations.  She says, "None of us will ever want to be in the position of tracking a victim.  But the question should be asked- who is the victim?"  Suggesting that her husband, not the accusers, is being harmed.

Three Things You Should Know About Music This Week

Slayer rescues a Kitten:

Popular thrash metal band, Slayer, while on tour saved a kitten freezing on the streets. Although this isn't huge music news, it's definitely a story worth sharing purely for its irony. A band known for being aggressive, tough, and relatively frightening is out on the street saving kittens. Not the first thing expected of them to be doing between concerts.

After having dinner at band member Kerry King's favorite steak house, a homeless man offered the crew a kitten that was freezing for one dollar, so they accepted and the kitten became a part of the band and slept with tour manager Jess Cortese on the bus. The kitten even made an appearance at one of the venues the band was playing. Another member of the crew knew someone who wanted a kitten and now the kitten has a new safe home.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Expected to Announce Inductees

Sometime in this coming week the Rock and Roll of Fame is expected to announce who will be inducted into the hall of fame in it's latest group of inductees. Die hard fans, as usual, have been going crazy shouting out their favorite bands that not only most likely won't be inducted, but have not even been considered.

Radio talk show, All Things Considered, presented a list of bands that have been over looked or as they like to say; "snubbed rockers". This list includes many bands that maybe should have been given some consideration.

AC/DC Releases New Album

Australian rock band AC/DC releases their 15th studio album "Rock or Bust" that takes the world by storm. With 172,000 copies already sold  it took number one on Billboard's Top Rock Albums and Hard Rock Albums charts, and number three on Billboards 200. This is the bands 9th top 10.

The last time the band made the charts was in 2008 with Black Ice which debuted at number one on Billboard's 200, the only number one on this chart for the band. However, Rock or Bust is the 26th title to make the Billboard's 200. Unfortunately band member Malcolm Young could not take part in the band's success after departing from the band due to his struggle with dementia. The success of this album proves AC/DC is truly an "oldy but goody" group.

Three Things You Should Know About the MLB Offseason This Week

The Winter Meetings bring many transactions

1. Cubs sign Jon Lester

After being traded by the Red Sox to the Athletics at the trading deadline, the A's failed to make a deep playoff run. Lester hit the open market at the season, and many knew that he would not be returning to Oakland for another year. Lester had many suitors, including the Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants and Cubs. It came down to the wire and at the beginning of this week, he announced that he would make his decision by Wednesday.
The Cubs offered a big deal. The Red Sox offered him a return to his first major league ball club. The Dodgers offered him flashing lights and a chance to win. The reigning champion Giants offered him a chance to join their team that has won 3 championships in the past 6 years. When it came down to it, Lester narrowed his choices down to the Cubs and the Red Sox. Lester ultimately chose to join the Cubs. His new deal is for 6 years and $155 million.

The Dodgers were busy this week, signing SP Brandon McCarthy, trading for 2B Howie Kendrick, SS Jimmy Rollins, C Yasmani Grandal, SP Joe Weiland, and a few prospects, and trading away 2B/SS Dee Gordon, SP Dan Haren, OF Matt Kemp, and a couple of prospects. Los Angeles started this crazy week by signing McCarthy to a 4 year/$48 million contract. They then traded All-Star Dee Gordon, former All-Star Dan Haren, and prospect Miguel Rojas to the Marlins for four top prospects. The Los Angeles team from the NL then traded one of the top prospects received from the Marlins, SP Andrew Heaney, to the Los Angeles team from the AL for 2B Howie Kendrick. They then traded a lot of salary in Matt Kemp when they sent him with C Tim Federowicz to the division rival San Diego Padres for  C Yasmani Grandal, high potential SP Joe Weiland, and prospect Zach Eiflin. The final move the Dodgers made was trading for the veteran SS Jimmy Rollins. The details of the trade have not yet been revealed.
These moves provide the Dodgers with a great mix of talent including young players and valuable veterans. Players they already have like all-stars Clayton Kershaw, Adrian Gonzalez, Zach Greinke, and Yasiel Puig only add to this phenomenal bunch. They put the reigning NL West division champions in a good place to defend their title.

After adding two All-Star bats in Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez, the Red Sox looked like a contending team. They looked like this until you realized who their rotation consisted of. They had many prospects and young pitchers nearly ready to play, but after adding these big bats, they wanted to win now. Clay Buchholz is a former Cy Young contender, going 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 2013 before getting hurt. He can make the rotation. Joe Kelly is a groundball pitcher acquired at the trading deadline for John Lackey, who posted 10 wins his first year starting in 2013. He can start if needed. Besides the fact that the Sox obviously needed a stud #1 pitcher, they also needed to fill out 2 or 3 pitching spots for the 2-5 places in the rotation to go along with Buchholz. The Sox got these pieces in Wade Miley, Rick Porcello, and Justin Masterson.
Miley was acquired via trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks for Rubby De La Rosa, Allen Webster, and an unnamed prospect. Porcello was also acquired through trade for power hitter Yoenis Cespedes, RP Alex Wilson, anda low-level prospect. Justin Masterson was signed to a one year deal worth $9.5 million plus up to $2.5 million more in incentives for amount of innings pitched. This ensures many innings for him.
Wade Miley was a 2012 All-Star who can put up 200 innings in a year. Rick Porcello is an above-average pitcher who had a 3.43 ERA last year and can also pitch 200 innings in a year. Justin Masterson is a former Red Sox top prospect traded in 2009 who was an All-Star in 2013. Masterson can throw 200 innings as well. If you haven't already done the math, 200 innings x 3 is 600 innings. The biggest problem with the Red Sox rotations as of late has been consistency. Guys like Clay Buchholz, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Josh Beckett, etc can't throw 200 innings. With the 3 newly acquired guys, the Red Sox have 3 reliable pitchers they can depend on for almost the whole season. Also, the best part is that the 3 pitchers have a combined salary of about $13 million. If they had signed the sought after superstar Jon Lester, they would have payed roughly $25 million a year for 200 innings. The Sox put together a great rotation in a matter of about a day.

Three Things You Should Know About the Medical World...This Week

The Flu Shot is less effective this year
by: Sam B

Every year the the flu virus goes around and makes many sick. Most people get the Flu Vaccine so they have a less likely chance of getting sick. The Flu shot is known to help prevent people from getting sick. However this year that is not the case. The center for disease control said that the flu shot is not as effective as it has been in the past because the current strain of the virus has mutated. This means that since the virus has changed you are still able to get it because your body is fighting off  a different form of the virus through the vaccine. Dr. Tom Frieden said, "we could have a season that is more severe than most with more hospitalizations." When they tested some on the samples of the virus 22 out of 85 were collected and were tested and found out to be different than the original virus.

Since we are more likely to get the virus now that the flu shot we have gotten this year may not match the flu virus going around everyone should be careful and try to stay away from anyone who may have the flu.

Paul Allen Pledges $100 Million for Cell Science
by: Sam B

Paul Allen is a big contributor to cell science. In the Allen Institute of Cell Science names after Paul Allen they are creating Models of IPS cells or skin cells that form the inner lining of the organs or skin. What they are trying to do is see what goes wrong in diseased cells and potentially for growing replacement tissues. This research and testing is all about timing. If they can see what is going wrong and then test for these diseased early enough than they may be able to help. With this research they can also predict what therapies will work best to counter diseases or even how to get rid of the disease in the first place.

This could effect any one of our lives on the future. This could help same a loved ones life or even out own.

Reducing Deaths from Lung Cancer
by: Sam B

Through the Affordable Care Act and if draft recommendations are adopted soon through Medicare we can reduce the number of deaths from lung cancer. Lung cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in Americans today and it is found in both men and women. There is 16% that are diagnosed that live 5 years after the original diagnosis. The problem is that when people are diagnosed it is already to late. 70% are diagnosed in the advanced stages and only 30% are lucky enough to get diagnosed in stages 1 or 2 when there is time to treat it. Since there are so many people who are diagnosed to late there will be many that will be eligible for free CT exam that will hopefully help catch more cases in the earlier stages when they will have a chance.

This is so important to hear about because everyone who is able to should get one of these tests. It could be the difference between life and death. Also encourage people to go get tested because you or your loved ones life could be effected.
