Three Things You Should Know About Entertainment... This Week

It’s Award Season!

Award season is just beginning and the nominees for many shows such as the SAG Awards and the Grammy’s have been releases recently. Another huge award show just published the nominees, the Golden Globes. This is the 72nd annual Golden Globe Award.

The nominees range from TV to film. An article that ABC News published listed all of the men, women, films and TV shows that got nominations. A lot of big names that we all know have been nominated. Some examples of actors and actresses nominated are Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo and Emma Stone. Some movies that are also listed are The Lego Movie, Into the Woods and The Theory of Everything. In TV The Good Wife scored many nominations along with Orange Is the New Black along with many more.

The award ceremony will be held on January 11, 2015 and Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are returning as the hosts for the huge event where many stars will make appearances.

2. Royals in the States!

The plans have been set for weeks for the Duke and Duchess to arrive in the United States, more specifically New York City. Earlier this week Prince William and Kate took a commercial flight and touched down in NYC for a three day visit.  The British ambassador to the United States, Sir Peter Westmacott said, “It’’s important for us to ensure they have a great time.” The Royals being in New York is a very big deal, people on social media have joked that their visit will “put New York on the map”.

While in New York, the Duke and Duchess were very busy. They went to many events and receptions during their visit. Kate went to visit Northside on Monday while Prince William went to meet with President Obama and speak at the World Bank. The two also attended a Brooklyn Nets game at the Barclays Center. They also did press appearances and took a helicopter tour of the city. The Royals were all over the place while they were briefly in the city.

The Duke and Duchess’s stay in the states was short but was very important. They are concerned the biggest ‘celebrities’ that have stayed in the city and the ones that brought the most attention to New York.

3. More than One Person of the Year?

Time Magazine has announced their Person of the Year. The annual issues has five covers this year to honor Ebola fights who have worked on the ground in West Africa to try and put an end to the disease’s outbreak.

The first person honored is a man, Dr. Jerry Brown. He is a Liberian surgeon who turned his hospital’s chapel into one of the country’s Ebola treatment center. Another honoree is Salame Karwah who is an Ebola survivor who lost both of her parents to the disease. One of the other people being on the cover is Foday Gallah, an ambulance supervisor and Ebola survivor in Monrovia. The last two honorees are Americans, Dr. Kent Brantly and Ella Watson-Stryker. Ella is an American health educator who has been helping to try to defeat the epidemic over the last year in West Africa. Kent was the first American to become infected by Ebola.

Time editor Nancy Gibbs explained the decision to make these particular people be on the cover of such a popular issue of the magazine. She said, “The rest of the world can sleep at night because a group of men and women are willing to stand and fight.” These men and women were not given this honor, they earned it because they battled the disease and went through a tremendous amount of struggles.
