Three Things You Should Know About Law...This Week

The Positive and Negative trials of Law

              1.  Wyoming is Now a legalized State for Same-Sex Marriage

Recently what's been happening in law is how Wyoming has just become the latest state to allow same sex marriage.  This law has been a big controversy for many years.  Wyoming became the 32nd state to legalize a same sex union.  This was a major move for Wyoming.  It was the location where Matthew Shepard, a gay student at University of Wyoming, was killed in a hate crime.  This happened in 1998.
Another fact the article pointed out was how important lawmakers are changing their views on same sex marriage.  For instance, President Barack Obama, former president Bill Clinton, former Vice President Dick Cheney, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman have all reversed their stances for the law.  This is showing that more people are favoring same sex unions.

               2.  Trial of the Boston Marathon Bombing Coming Up

The upcoming trial with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is going to be a memorable trial for many survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon.  After over a year of waiting, marathon bombing survivors brace themselves for the upcoming trial.  All the survivors think justice will be served, even though Tsarnaev is probably happy and proud of what he did. Some of the survivors will be asked to be on a list of potential witnesses and called to testify.  Federal prosecutors have begun preparing bombing survivors for the graphic evidence that will be shown at the trial.
Jury selection begins Monday January 5, 2015.  However, Tsarnaev’s lawyers requested a last minute appeal to postpone jury selection and order that the trial be located to a district outside of boston.  They say it will be impossible to pick a fair jury in the city where the bombs exploded.  The US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit rejected the lawyer's request, stating that the request did not meet the threshold.

3. The Ferguson Shooting

On August 9, 2014 in Ferguson, Saint Louis a black and unarmed man was shot by a white police officer.  The Ferguson trial has been a big uproar since the jury's decision to not charge the white officer.  There has been many violent protests since the November 24 grand jury decision.
After the NAACP's found out about this incident they suddenly got involved.  The NAASP is a group of people that support the african american people and is the most historically known organization in the 20th century.  The group is asking for a new grand jury to look over the case and consider charges to the white police officer who shot the 18 year old boy.  They think this trial is unfair and needs a new grand jury who isn't just on one side .  They also want a new grand jury because of the Saint Louis County Prosecutor, Bob McCulloch.  McCulloch allowed false testimony by one of his female witnesses.  The NAACP just want the truth to be told and have a fair trial.
